New Delhi: World Leprosy Day, observed on 30th January each year in India, is the day to raise awareness about this chronic disease. Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is an infectious disease caused by slow-growing type of bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. Since it is a slowly developing, progressive disease, it may take up to 20 years to develop signs of the infection. The disease mainly damages the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.

The primary signs and symptoms of leprosy are skin lesions and a lack of sensation in the nervous system. The disease can cause symptoms such as joint pain, weight loss, blisters and rashes, painless ulcers, hair loss (loss of eyebrows), eye damage, facial disfigurement, etc.

Despite being an ancient disease, many myths persist about leprosy which affects millions of people today, resulting in discrimination and social stigma of leprosy. Take THIS ILEP's Quiz to separate fact from fiction and learn more about leprosy.
